The following is from Worldview Weekend:
JESUS: OUR PROPITIATION by William Gray Introduction My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. (1 John 2:1-2) We live in a time in history when there is an abundance of information everywhere; Google, Wikkipedia, radio, television, computers, phone apps, multiple social media and other sources, yet despite this abundance of information there seemingly is a widespread lack of real knowledge and wisdom. Wisdom, of course, comes from God! “For the Lord gives wisdom; out of His mouth comes knowledge and understanding; He stores up sound wisdom for the upright…” (Proverbs 2:6 – 7 NKJV) It is disheartening that so few people and organizations have any true knowledge or wisdom, but then, it is not surprising because of the great lack of the knowledge of God's Word and the knowledge of the one true God and Jesus Christ whom He has sent. The greatest expository preacher of the 20th century, according to many, Dr. D. Martyn Lloyd- Jones said in his work on “Studies in the Sermon on the Mount" that “the most obvious feature in the life of the Christian Church today is, alas, its superficiality." (D. Martyn Lloyd -Jones Studies in the Sermon on the Mount circa 1959) Not only are our many sources of information superficial, but many church services are also superficial. Even the so-called “news" stations which give around-the-clock “news" have no real “news" of any value. What is frequently used is not real reporting of facts at all, but rather a reference to “feelings" and pictures obtained in many cases from social media! Such programs are almost totally without any analysis or in-depth reporting. This is also true of many so-called “seeker friendly" church services. These services are often designed to appeal to the pagan intellect as “entertainment" rather than a spiritual or worshipful experience for Christians. It seems to be popular today that many churches rarely sing any of the great hymns of the faith, and if they do, the hymns are “jazzed up" to “rock music" and frequently one cannot distinguish the 30 or so minutes of so-called “worship music" from a rock concert. Frequently these “warm-up sessions" are loud, boisterous, and lacking in biblical content! Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones said in his introduction to his work on studies in the “Sermon on the Mount" that “one main cause of this “superficiality" is our attitude to the Bible, our failure to take it seriously… It is our textbook, it is our only source, it is our only authority. We know nothing about God and about the Christian life in a true sense, apart from the Bible.” (D. Martyn Lloyd- Jones: Studies on the Sermon on the Mount page 10 circa 1959) It is my hope that the reader of this article may come to know the only true God through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. “No man can come to the Father except he come by Jesus”. (John 14:6). Scripture gives us the fact that Jesus is the propitiation for our sins. We will take a look at the fact of this propitiation; the meaning of this propitiation; and the implication of this propitiation. Who Do You Say Jesus Is? - Paul Washer The following is from Answers in Genesis:
Death is not good by Dr. Terry Mortenson A vast number of conservative theologians accept animal death before Adam’s Fall. No significant doctrines are impacted, they say, if animals have been killing each other for millions of years. Many pastors and theologians today believe that the earth is millions or billions of years old. But based on my reading and interactions, it is clear that most of them have never really considered the theological implications of allowing animal death, disease, predation, and extinction prior to Adam’s sin in the Garden of Eden. ARE YOU PREPARED TO ANSWER CHRISTIANS WHO SAY THE AGE OF CREATION ISN’T IMPORTANT? When challenged about this seeming inconsistency, they usually point to the “overwhelming scientific evidence” and say or imply that their perspective is easy to harmonize with the Bible and it doesn’t significantly affect any important doctrines. This attitude is being promoted in theology textbooks widely used in conservative evangelical seminaries, colleges, and churches. An example is Wayne Grudem’s Systematic Theology (1994). This work is helpful in many ways and immensely influential, having been translated into at least eight major languages. Like many other evangelicals who reject the young-earth view, Grudem believes that the Fall had an impact on the whole creation. And he teaches that when Jesus returns and renews the creation, “there will be no more thorns or thistles, no more floods or droughts, no more deserts or uninhabitable jungles, no more earthquakes or tornadoes, no more poisonous snakes or bees that sting or mushrooms that kill” (p. 836). But this outstanding, highly respected theologian apparently does not see how the concept of millions of years of death before the Fall destroys the Bible’s teaching about the goodness of the original creation, the prospect of goodness in the new heaven and earth, and the goodness of God Himself. Are you prepared to answer Christians who say the age of creation isn’t important? If it's true that the Bible contains scientific facts that were written thousands of years before man discovered them, the implications are staggering. These facts would be evidence that the Bible is the word of God, and its promise of Heaven and threat of Hell are therefore not to be mocked or ignored. "Ten of the Top Scientific Facts in the Bible" is a half-hour of awe-inspiring and faith-building video, filled with ancient biblical truths—the earth’s free float in space, the dinosaur and why it disappeared, laws of quarantine, the earth being round, and much more. This is a powerful resource to encourage Christians, and to challenge the most hardened skeptic to take the claims of the gospel seriously. "Excellent! Unfortunately, not only is Ken Blanchard ecumenical, but he is also into New Age spirituality. It's no surprise that Willow Creek would host someone like Ken Blanchard, but it is a surprise that men like Joe Stowell and Chip Ingram would team up with Ken Blanchard. I'll be charitable in giving them the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps they were not aware of Blanchard's ecumenism and New Age spirituality before teaming up with him. Ken Blanchard: Leading Like Jesus or Being Managed by Other Forces? (Let Us Reason) It’s no secret that the New Age movement wants to compromise the church by incorporating their practices into the body of Christ. The business world has been consistently exposed to New Age concepts to bring about co-operation and productivity in the workplace. On the other hand, we find business practices being incorporated into the body of Christ. At this particular time the New Age movement has found an open door into the Christian church; I would like to see it shut. Ken Blanchard, is well known throughout the business world, and is the best-selling author of 31 books including the One Minute Manager that has sold over 10 million copies. Blanchard is also part of the late Peter Drucker’s Leader to Leader network. Drucker was also one of Rick Warren’s main mentors (Warren says, “I read everything Peter Drucker writes” (see Community Connections). Many in Christianity have been introduced to Blanchard by the “Lead Like Jesus” conference[s], where Rick Warren, Bill Hybels, Dan Cathy, Marjorie Dorr, Tami Heim, Ken Melrose, and Laurie Beth Jones have been speakers (Lead Like Jesus Celebration on April 29, 2004) http://www.christianitytoday.com/conferences/events/2004/40429.html Among the “Lead Like Jesus” National Board Members, are Rick Warren, Bill Hybels, Bob Buford, John Maxwell and New Ager Mark Victor Hansen. Both Rick Warren and Bill Hybels did a conference with Ken Blanchard (Leadership Summit 2005); Rick Warren, Ken Blanchard and Bill Hybels spoke at ( Lead Like Jesus 2003, 2004). At the 2004 Lead like Jesus Conference, Ken Blanchard & Bill Hybels spoke: “What is Lead Like Jesus All About? and “Making Your Commitment to Lead Like Jesus”(www.leadlikejesus.com). Blanchard professes to have been a Christian since the mid-1980s. Blanchard states in We Are the Beloved, that, “In 1985 my [spiritual] journey got a boost when Margie and I met Bob and Linda Buford.” A few pages later in the book, Blanchard states, “I bowed my head and said, 'Lord, I can't save myself here.'“And then, “I accept Jesus as my Savior and the bridge between You and me” (We Are the Beloved, 1994). Blanchard recalls in an audio interview “Remembering what Schuller said: Jesus being the greatest one minute manager of all time” (audio tape). Blanchard soon recognized Jesus as a great leader. Blanchard sees things myopically, through the lens of business, which hinders him from seeing Jesus nature and ways accurately. His mantra is about Jesus as the greatest leadership model; Jesus is the greatest leadership model-Regardless of your faith. While Blanchard says it’s wonderful to have God as his boss, it is left up to interpretation what he means by this? Of his business or his life, spiritual life, or both? I do not mean to impugn his character but there are some very serious issues that need to be addressed for someone who is so well known to the world and the church. Life Wide Open has just been republished in a new edition for a new set of readers. Deborah Dombrowski writes: “In light of the fact that in David Jeremiah’s 2003 book, Life Wide Open, he favorably quotes feminine spiritualist Sue Monk Kidd ( When the Heart Waits), contemplative Calvin Miller (Into the Depths of God), Buddhist sympathizer Peter Senge (The Fifth Discipline), emerging church leader, Erwin McManus, and mystic sympathizer Jim Collins, it may not be any wonder that he has partnered up with Ken Blanchard who is a board member of the Hoffman Quadrinity Process Institute and a participant in the interspiritual, New Age organization, Heartland Circle.” (http://www.sliceoflaodicea.com/) -See: THE TWIN PYTHONS OF DECEPTION: Apprising Ministries Good summary quote from the same article: "Truly when you measure the David Jeremiahs and the Brian McLarens and the Rick Warrens by the D.L. Moodys and the G. Campbell Morgans and the Robert Murray McCheynes there is an appaling lack of continuity in what is being taught by that first group of fifth-rate man-pleasers. Today the Church has become afraid to use her God-given discernment and is unfortunately all too willing to accept anyone who comes naming the name of Jesus regardless of what they say about our precious Christ." "The Resurrection of Gavin Stone is a light-hearted film that pretends to be a Christian movie but is actually everything wrong with American Christianity. What makes the scene where Gavin shares his mock-testimony ironic is this: That's everything this movie is. It makes you think you're hearing and seeing something genuinely Christian. But it's every bit as fake as fake Christianity can be." -See: Pastor Gabe's Blog: The Resurrection of Gavin Stone: A Review Related: The Serpent’s Whisper: Why I Don’t See “Christian” Movies – Pulpit & Pen Do Not Be Surprised...: James MacDonald Proud to Have Rick Warren, Mark Driscoll & Bill Hybels Endorse 'Vertical Church' Book [Charles] Darwin letter reveals, “I do not believe in the Bible” (posted by Marsha West) According to CBS News: While many scholars believe Charles Darwin was an agnostic or even an atheist, it can be difficult to find hard evidence to back up those beliefs. He was reluctant to discuss religion and his writings are often silent on the issue. But now a simple one-sentence handwritten letter signed by the naturalist offers proof he did not believe in God. The letter, written 21 years after the publication of “The Origin of Species,” was auctioned off Monday afternoon at Bonhams in New York. It fetched $197,000 at the auction, three times the previous record of $59,142 for a four-page letter that Darwin had penned to his niece. Becket spent over 25 years pursuing the desires we all desperately want as human beings: relationships, love, intimacy, support, and affirmation. Undeniably, these desires had a unique grip on his heart that was incomparable to any other desire. They carried with them emotions that vastly impacted his will, intentions, and actions and became a unique part of his identity. The problem with this is that he was not created to have an identity rooted in sexual orientation or human relationships. No one is. We were created to have an identity rooted in God. If that's off, all of our desires are off and we find ourselves chasing things that we were never supposed to pursue. Homosexual relationships are one of those things. It stands contrary to God's moral will for mankind. But we don't have to stand as enemies of God. Through Jesus Christ, there is hope for new life. There is hope for salvation. Becket's story portrays this truth with such kindness and from an intimate understanding of your life experiences, thoughts, and desires. May you see his love for you, God's love for you, as you watch it. Just like Becket, even if you have found your identity in worthless things, God died for you. He can make you a new creation and save you from a terrible fate if you call out to Him. If you are broken over your sin, call out to God in repentance and faith in Jesus Christ that He will redeem you.
